چکیده

INTRODUCTION Functional impairment of [parts of] the upper limb has many different expressions. Sound biomechanical analysis is at the basis of the management of the physical challenges involved. An outline of the basics of a mechanical systems approach is presented below. Orthoses are among the many treatment options for upper limb impairments. An orthosis can be defined as a mechanical construction intended to improve a functioning part of the human body where the anatomical structures are still present. Orthoses fulfill their task by the exertion of forces onto the anatomical structures. Depending on the upper limb segments involved, and depending on the functional requirements [i.e. static support only, or dynamical assistance of muscle functions] a specific pattern of forces between the orthosis and the body is needed. Therefore, no universal upper limb orthosis exists. Each functional loss, in combination with personal wishes and demands, results in a different orthotic design. However, every orthosis needs to fulfill some basic requirements concerning cosmesis, comfort, and control. Some examples of orthotic management of the upper limb are elucidated below.

Effect of Foot Orthoses on the Timing of Lower Limb Muscles Activity during Walking in Older Adults

Introduction: As a person gets older, their gait patterns change and their ability to walk decreases. Orthoses are used to relieve musculoskeletal disorders, skeletal problems, disabilities, etc. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of orthoses on timing of lower limb muscles in the older adults during gait. Methods: The present study was a clinical trial. 14 females ...

Electromyographic Activity of Selected Muscles During Squat Exercise With and Without Upper Limb Assistance

Purpose: A variation in squatting technique is using arms to actively push the bar up with the upper limbs which is common in bodybuilding. This study aimed to compare the Electromyography (EMG) activity of selected muscles during squat with and without upper limb assistance. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study. Fifteen healthy male power lifters (using the convenience sampling method...

Comfort and midfoot mobility rather than orthosis hardness or contouring influence their immediate effects on lower limb function in patients with anterior knee pain.

BACKGROUND Despite evidence for use of foot orthoses in the treatment of anterior knee pain, there is a paucity of research into their mechanisms of action. This study (i) determined the immediate lower limb kinematics and muscle activity adaptations, and (ii) evaluated the effect of individual's comfort and foot mobility. METHODS Forty individuals diagnosed with anterior knee pain were measu...

Concept and Design of a 3D Printed Support to Assist Hand Scanning for the Realization of Customized Orthosis

In the rehabilitation field, the use of additive manufacturing techniques to realize customized orthoses is increasingly widespread. Obtaining a 3D model for the 3D printing phase can be done following different methodologies. We consider the creation of personalized upper limb orthoses, also including fingers, starting from the acquisition of the hand geometry through accurate 3D scanning. How...

Effects of rigid and soft foot orthoses on dynamic balance in females with flatfoot

Abstract Background: Various types of foot orthoses are prescribed for people with flatfoot. It has been reported that orthoses not only improve the biomechanics of the lower limb, but also have good effects on some balance parameters in these subjects. It is hypothesized that the latter effect is dependent on the rigidity of the orthoses. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the ...
